In a mastering context, the function of the brickwall limiter is to set a ceiling threshold beyond which the volume of a track cannot go, and then increase the volume of the track so that it approaches the limit and fulfills the loudness requirements for the material. This is generally one of the last processes applied to a track before it is ready for broadcast or digital distribution. In a mixing application, the limiter can be used in a manner similar to a compressor to add punch or color to a mix.
